When the alliance breaks

* Luís Alberto Alves

The Hebrew people left Egypt, rescued by God. He left the suffering caused by more than 430 years of slavery. Of hard work, without rest and when he dared to complain he received lashes in response. Many died, others became ill, and ended up crippled by excessive service.

From the high heavens the Lord heard the cry for deliverance. He prepared Moses to serve as a compass on the way out of that country, run by Pharaoh. They saw several miracles: the waters of the Nile River were dyed red, the plague of frogs, grasshoppers and finally the death of the firstborn.

No one left Egypt empty-handed: everyone was given gold and silver to quickly allow peace to return to the nation of the Pharaohs. On the walk, the pillar of fire illuminated them at night and the cloud kept them from the strong desert heat. They crossed the Red Sea on dry feet. They ate of the manna that fell from the sky daily and drank from the water spewed from the rock.

Until the day came when they heard the loud voice of God speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai. Frightened by that gigantic cry, they asked Moses to be the interlocutor, for if they continued before God, they would die. They witnessed his entry into the black cloud from where the Lord was talking to his servant.
